Достаточно необычный проект от фирмы «Локхид» по теме CMCA (Cruise Missile Carrier Aircraft) . Ещё с 1971 года внутри фирмы шли разработки нового типа самолёта с ядерной силовой установкой. Достижения в ядерной физике теоретически позволяли сделать достаточно компактный реактор и двигательную установку закрытого типа необходимой мощности.
Был подготовлен проект тяжёлого самолёта с ядерной силовой установкой (ЯСУ) со временем полёта до 20 дней, изначально проектируемый как охотник на советские подводные ракетоносцы или летающий командный пункт (также исследовался вариант заправщика). В варианте командного пункта он даже рассматривался как конкурент E-4 Nightwatch, но из-за большой цены не был принят.
В 1978 году на его базе был разработан проект NuCMCA (Nuclear-powered Cruise Missile Carrier Aircraft — самолёт-носитель крылатых ракет с ядерной силовой установкой). Предполагалось, что благодаря ЯСУ такой самолёт может проводить в воздухе до 16 дней, что сделает его почти неуязвимым для первого обезоруживающего удара межконтинентальными ракетами, ибо можно будет непрерывно держать в воздухе почти весь парк самолётов.
Для NuCMCA было разработано два варианта размещения ракет. Первый предусматривал обычный сброс AGM-86 ALCM из бомболюков, при этом в самолёте можно было расположить до 90 ракет (был вариант на 120). Во втором варианте старт происходил при помощи пневматической катапульты, питаемой реактором, из носа самолёта.
Полученное ускорение позволило бы ракете серьёзно сэкономить топливо на старте и разгоне и тем самым пролететь значительно больше. Но в этом варианте из-за размещения массивной катапульты оставалось место лишь для 32 ALCM. В целом военные отнеслись со скепсисом к такому проекту, но для исследования вопроса о создании самолёта с ЯСУ финансирование в малых объёмах продолжалось до 1982 года.
Расчётная полезная нагрузка самолёта составляла от 182 тонн (четырёхдвигательный вариант) до 272 тонн (шестидвигательный). Крейсерская скорость полёта – 0,75М, «аварийная» дальность полёта на химическом топливе – 1850 км, длина ВПП – 2743 м.
