New Frontiers in Positron Emission Tomography: From Technological Innovation to Transformative Applications
Positron emission tomography (PET) has an impactful role both in routine clinical care and in advancing biomedical research. Recent technological innovations, including total-body PET scanners with unprecedented detection sensitivity, brain scanners with spatial resolution sufficient to visualize small brain nuclei, and PET detectors with very fast timing properties that allow cross-sectional images to be produced without tomographic image reconstruction are opening up a wealth of new opportunities that will transform patient care and provide unique directions for studying the human body in health and disease. In this presentation, recent and future possible technological innovations will be discussed, alongside examples of how these innovations are transforming our ability to visualize and quantify biology throughout the human body.
