Mars Perseverance Sol 579: Front Left Hazard Avoidance Camera (Hazcam) 14:59:40 to 15:27:47

Lithology: Fine-grained, well-sorted sedimentary rock likely deposited in a lacustrine setting; an olivinebearing coarse mudstone. The rock primarily contains detrital olivine and aqueous alteration products of olivine (e.g., serpentine) plus minor salts. Minor phases detected may include chromite, ilmenite, apatite, and zircon/baddeleyite. No clear evidence of sand-sized pyroxene or feldspar was observed. The rock contains little, if any, evidence of sulfate minerals and a possible/weak fluorescence signal potentially related to organics.

Mars Perseverance Sol 579: Front Left Hazard Avoidance Camera (Hazcam)

NASA's Mars Perseverance rover acquired this image of the area in front of it using its onboard Front Left Hazard Avoidance Camera A.

This image was acquired on Oct. 6, 2022 (Sol 579) at the local mean solar time of 14:59:40 to 15:27:47.

Gullies in Bloom -HiRISE Science Team

https://www.uahirise.org/ESP_022472_1285
salty water gullies

https://www.uahirise.org/ESP_022472_1285

This observation shows mid-latitude-type gullies and dark and light materials. There are dunes in this crater as well (east of the gully aprons). One of the more stunning features is the gully formation right outside the center swath of the full image.

At HiRISE resolution, we can examine whether there has been activity in the gullies that post-dates the placement of windblown materials, like boulders down the slopes. We can also gather information to help determine the processes responsible for gully formation.

This caption is based on the original science rationale.
